Which barge should you choose for a birthday? The criteria that matter

Two barges can hold the same number of people and still feel completely different. For a birthday, this difference quickly makes itself felt: between a dinner where everyone needs to be seated and an evening where you want to dance, the needs aren't the same.

In practice, the first criterion isn't the style of the boat. It's how you're going to use the space.

Start with the number of guests

Capacity needs to match the actual number of participants, with a margin that fits the format you've chosen. For a birthday with 40 or 50 guests, for example, you need to check whether the boat genuinely allows comfortable movement once the tables, the buffet or the dance floor are set up.

Look at how the spaces are laid out

An open space can work well for an evening built around music. Several distinct areas, on the other hand, can make it easier to move between drinks, the meal and dancing. What you need to check is the space genuinely available for each use, not just the boat's official capacity.

Cruising or a moored boat?

If you'd like the scenery to change over the course of the evening, cruising can bring a real shift in pace. Moored, the boat becomes more of a reception venue. Both formats can work for a birthday, but they lead to quite different organisation.

Think about the details that shape the evening

Music, catering, a cake, decoration, access and timings can all affect the final choice. It's best to factor these in from the outset. A barge that looks suitable on paper can turn out to be less practical if it doesn't fit the constraints of your event.
