Can you decorate a barge?

A few flowers on the tables, matching stationery, soft lighting: on board, the decoration can stay quite simple and yet change the atmosphere immediately. But a barge is not an empty hall that you can fit out freely. The surfaces, access points and equipment all call for a few precautions.

In practical terms, the right instinct is to ask what can be installed, where and how. The main things to check are the fixing systems and the technical areas. A decoration that looks lovely on paper can become complicated if it requires drilling, hanging or blocking a passageway.

Which decorations are generally the simplest?

Freestanding decoration is often the easiest to organise: floral arrangements on the tables, menus, place cards, small decorative objects or tableware. Candles may also be possible, depending on the boat's rules and the safety conditions.

Lightweight signage, freestanding boards and certain textile elements can complete the look without altering the structure of the boat. The idea is to work with what is already there rather than trying to hide every detail.

Watch out for fixings

Garlands, panels, balloons or fabrics sometimes need fixing systems. However, not every method is suitable for a boat. Adhesive fixings can leave marks, a hanging element can get in the way of equipment, and an oversized set-up can restrict circulation.

Before having a scenography made, send the references or the plan to the boat. That way you will know what is acceptable and which solutions to use. I would rather make this clear: agreeing things in advance often saves you from having to alter the decoration on arrival.

Decorating without losing usable space

On a boat, every square metre has a purpose. A decorated table must not hinder the service, a panel must not hide an exit, and a very wide bouquet can quickly get in the guests' way. So you need to look at the decoration at eye level, not just from a mock-up.

For an event at the quayside, you can also make the most of the outdoor surroundings and the furniture already in place. When sailing, the view of the Seine naturally provides plenty of visual interest.

The right level of decoration depends on the boat

A barge with materials already in place, large picture windows or a terrace does not need the same decoration as a more neutral space. The best result often comes from a simple palette and a few well-placed elements.

In practice, it is best to prepare a short list: what is placed, what is hung, what has to be delivered, who installs and who removes. This lets you keep the decoration polished while respecting how the boat operates.
