Can You Play Music on a Barge?

A welcome playlist, a few tracks during the cocktail, then more prominent music after dinner: the soundtrack can accompany a whole evening on board. But on a barge, volume is not a minor detail. The boat sails or stays moored in an urban environment, with rules and neighbours to take into account.

The idea is therefore to distinguish three things: the right to play music, the possible noise level and the equipment used. In practice, these parameters are not the same on every boat.

What music can you plan?

A simple playlist may be enough for a cocktail party or a dinner. It creates an atmosphere without bringing in an additional supplier. For a livelier evening, you can plan a DJ or a live band, subject to the boat's conditions.

The right solution depends above all on the stage of the reception. Discreet music early in the evening does not require the same set-up as a programme designed for dancing. Before choosing the equipment, you therefore need to define how the music will actually be used.

The noise level must suit the boat

On a barge, sound carries differently from in an enclosed room. The proximity of the quays, buildings and outdoor spaces can also change how loud it seems. You should therefore avoid thinking purely in terms of power.

The point to check is the permitted noise level and how it can be controlled. The boat may have specific instructions, particularly when the event takes place moored or in the evening.

Moored or sailing: the same atmosphere, but not always the same constraints

A moored boat offers a more stable set-up for installing a speaker, a console or a light system. During a cruise, the layout and the management of the spaces may be different. The route, the duration and the configuration of the reception then come into the equation.

For this reason, say right from the start whether you are planning simple background music or a proper dancing session. This lets you choose suitable equipment without oversizing the installation.

A few habits for a smooth musical evening

• Have the position of the speakers and the mixing desk approved.
• Ask for the permitted times and noise levels.
• Avoid placing equipment in a walkway.

I would rather be clear about this: successful music on board often owes more to good installation than to volume. Clear sound, well placed and consistent with the format of the evening, is generally enough to create the atmosphere you want.
