Can you host a seated dinner on a barge?

The first guests settle in, the waiters move between the tables and, for a few minutes, everyone is still looking for their seat. On a barge, a seated dinner can give a real sense of occasion, but you need to think about the space before choosing the menu.

The question is not just the boat's stated capacity. You need to look at the capacity in dinner configuration, taking in the tables, the chairs, the service routes and any technical areas. It depends above all on… how you want to host your guests.

"Dinner" capacity is not "standing" capacity

A boat can hold more people for a cocktail reception than for a sit-down meal. Each guest needs a seat, room to eat and a minimum passage for the service. If you add a buffet, a dance floor or a speech area, the usable surface shrinks further.

Before booking, therefore, ask for the actual seated-dinner capacity in the layout you want. It is far more useful than a capacity figure taken in isolation.

How should the tables be arranged?

Round tables, rectangular tables, long banqueting tables: several layouts are possible. The right choice depends on the shape of the boat and the effect you are after. A large central table sometimes makes the room easier to read, while several smaller tables can make conversation more relaxed.

The thing to check is the width of the passageways. Waiters must be able to move around with the dishes and clear plates without guests having to shift. You also need to keep access clear to the toilets, the exits and the outdoor areas.

Catering service needs planning in advance

A seated dinner involves a precise sequence: setting up, a drinks reception if wanted, starter, main course, dessert, drinks and clearing. The boat needs to know how the caterer wants to work, in particular whether part of the preparation will take place on board.

In practice, the meal will run all the more smoothly if the seating plan, the service times and the position of the staff are settled before boarding. This also avoids unnecessary crossings between guests and the catering team.

And after dinner?

Dinner is often only one part of the evening. If you are planning speeches, entertainment or dancing afterwards, this needs to be built in from the outset. Some of the tables may be able to be moved, depending on what the boat allows and permits.

I would rather make this clear: for a seated dinner, the boat's layout deserves almost as much attention as the choice of menu. Once the plan is agreed, the rest of the evening becomes much easier to organise.
