So how long should you hire a barge for? There's no single duration that works for every event. The idea is to start from the planned running order, then work out how long the boat needs to be at your disposal.

For a cocktail reception, the timing can stay fairly compact

A corporate or family cocktail reception can work over a relatively short period, especially if the programme stays simple. Guests generally need less time to settle in than for a seated dinner or a reception with several speeches.

For a dinner, it's best to leave some breathing space

A dinner served on board takes more time: welcome, aperitif, service, the meal itself, then perhaps dessert or entertainment. Cutting the hire too short can make the evening feel rushed. It's often more comfortable to allow some margin.

For a party with dancing, the end of the cruise matters too

With a dance floor or entertainment, the boat can be used differently at different moments. Some groups mainly want to cruise at the start, then enjoy the boat once the route is over. Others prefer to keep cruising for longer. It mainly depends on the scenario you choose.
